ONE on TNT 3 has a fighter by the name of Yuya Wakamatsu that fans will want to watch.
ONE on TNT 3 isn’t going to have the star power that the first two cards had, certainly no one with the credibility of a Demetrius Johnson, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t incredible talent on the card. That’s why this week’s pick for the fighter to watch is the rising star from Japan, Yuya Wakamatsu.
Wakamatsu made his bones in Pancrase, the same promotion that launched careers like Ken Shamrock, Frank Shamrock, Bas Rutten, Minoru Suzuki, and others. Wakamatsu is the next great to come out of the promotion, though at just 26-years-old, he’s still susceptible to getting torched by more experienced fighters. Hence Wakamatsu’s first-round loss to the aforementioned Johnson to launch the ONE Flyweight Grand Prix.
His loss to Johnson was his second fight and second loss in ONE Championship, following his debut loss to fellow rising star Danny Kingad. That was a stretch of fights that would see Wakamatsu go 1-3 in his four fights stretching from Pancrase to ONE Championship.
After his loss to Johnson, however, Wakamatsu has gone 3-0 with two first-round knockouts. The two KO wins both happened in under two minutes. Of Wakamatsu’s 11 knockouts, seven have come in the first round and none before the third minute.
Wakamatsu clearly doesn’t get paid by the hour.
Wakamatsu is one of the best pure strikers in MMA today, and the currently fourth-ranked flyweight fighter has clearly grown into a real threat in the division. His opponent is the fifth-ranked fighter, Reece McLaren, meaning that the winner will surely earn a spot or two higher up on the rankings after a win over a fellow top-five opponent.
Wakamatsu has made it clear that he isn’t a fighter to miss out on.
ONE on TNT 3 takes place on Wednesday, April 21, live from Singapore. Follow along with FanSided for all your live news and highlights.
