Kansas and West Virginia are set to square off at Allen Fieldhouse.
The Big 12 looks like it will be a beast this season with four teams currently ranked inside the AP’s top 10. Two of these teams will face off Tuesday night as No. 7 West Virginia travels to Allen Fieldhouse to take on No. 3 Kansas in one of the best games of the week.
The Mountaineers have been very impressive early on, racing off to a 7-1 start with the lone defeat coming by five points to Gonzaga in the Jimmy V Classic. Bob Huggins’ team remains a tough defensive out but isn’t as reliant on the press as it has been in recent years, mixing in different looks to take advantage of the unique talents of West Virginia’s roster.
It’s been hard to argue with the results, as the Mountaineers have picked up good non-conference wins against VCU and Richmond. Stepping up to take on Kansas will require a higher gear as the Jayhawks look set to go toe-to-toe with Baylor for Big 12 supremacy again.
The Jayhawks avoided a potential upset last week by escaping Lubbock with a one-point victory against Texas Tech. Bill Self’s team has won seven straight games since dropping their season opener to Gonzaga, relying on a well-balanced team that can beat its opponent in a variety of ways.
Guard Ochai Agbaji was the difference-maker against the Red Raiders, pouring in 23 points and snagging five rebounds to help Kansas secure the win. The Jayhawks will need another big effort from him in order to hold off the Mountaineers. The determining factor could be home court, since West Virginia hasn’t won a game at Allen Fieldhouse since joining the Big 12.
