Robert Whittaker has his eyes on Israel Adesanya following his victory over Kelvin Gastelum.
Following his victory in the main event at UFC Vegas 24, Robert Whittaker sat down with members of the media to discuss what comes next for his career. Whittaker believes there is only one answer to the question. He wants Adesanya.
“It’s funny it’s like after the win everyone is calling for it for me,” he said during his post-fight interview. “That’s kinda how I’ve always taken to the approach of fighting. If you beat them all you’re eventually at the top. It’s a simple path. There is no path that makes sense for me other than that title shot. That’s the shot that I want and that I am getting. That’s the thing, I’m going to go home and look at my injuries, look at my body because it was a tough fight. But I think the borders in New Zealand are the best they’ve ever been so in September we can go and get a packed-out stadium there and just once again pump the industry down there and in MMA as a whole.”
Whittaker contends that he has put in the work and demonstrated that there is no other fight that makes sense for the champion but a rematch of their middleweight title bout.
“There is no other fight,” he said. “There is just that fight left. I have defended the No. 1 spot three times against the ‘next big thing’ I took this fight with Gastelum on one month’s notice after Costa pulled out, Which I was going to fight Costa too. So I took it and I switched from No. 3 to No. 8 and I still took it. I adjusted and I got the win once again against a hard opponent that gave Adesanya himself a hard fight. I think – no I know that is the only fight left.”
Whether or not that is the next title fight in the mind of UFC president Dana White is yet to be seen as he opted not to appear at the post-fight press conferences. But one thing is certain. Whittaker has made a very strong case for his title aspirations.
