Heavyweight prospect Tom Aspinall is the fighter to watch this weekend at UFC Vegas 19.
Following solid stints in both Cage Warriors and BAMMA, Aspinall was signed to the UFC in 2020. Aspinall (9-2) has gone two for two thus far in the promotion, scoring back-to-back first-round knockouts over Alan Baudot and Jake Collier, with the latter earning him a performance of the night bonus check. The Wigan native trains out of Team Kaobon in Liverpool alongside the likes of Darren Till and Mike Grundy, all under the tutelage of head coach Colin Heron.
While the 6’6″ Aspinall is known for having heavy hands, he is actually quite the grappler. In fact, Aspinall actually won his second pro fight via submission (heel hook) and is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. Also of note, Aspinall has never won a fight that has gone past the first round. All of his wins have come in round one, eight via KO/TKO and one by way of submission. This is a big spot for Aspinall, and a victory would open up a lot of different matchups going forward at 265 lb.
Who will Tom Aspinall take on at UFC Vegas 19?
Aspinall will be taking a big step up in competition this weekend when he takes on Arlovski. Arlovski has had himself a bit of a career resurgence, winning his last two bouts following multiple losing streaks dating back to 2016. “The Pitbull” had a perfect 2020 where he went 2-0, defeating both Philipe Lins and Tanner Boser via unanimous decision. Arlovski has turned back the clock somewhat and is now putting a halt to the progress made by these up-and-comers in the heavyweight division. However, could the third time be the charm? Aspinall is another heavyweight prospect that is looking to grab a victory over the former champion, and at just 27 years old, is younger than most of Arlovski’s opponents these last few years. With what we know about Aspinall, his best bet is to try and get Arlovski out of there in the first round. The only problem is that his opponent’s chin has actually held up pretty well as of late. Either way, it’s MMA and nothing is out of the question anymore, so tune into UFC Vegas 19 on Saturday to see if Arlovski stumps the youngster or if he gets knocked out like most of Aspinall’s opponents.
