Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling will be battling it out for the UFC bantamweight title at UFC 259 as the third title fight added to that card.
UFC 259 is looking like one of the best cards of the year and it’s only January. The UFC is rolling out the big guns for the March 6 event with three title fights on the main card. In addition to Jan Blachowics vs. Israel Adesanya and Amanda Nunes vs. Megan Anderson, they have now announced Petr Yan vs. Aljamain Sterling. The bantamweight title will be on the line to round out the title heavy Pay-Per-View.
Yan will be defending his bantamweight title for the first time since winning the title back in July. He has now won 10 in a row against stiff competition such as Jose Aldo, Urijah Faber, and Jimmie Rivera. Yan has proven that he is the top dog at 135 pounds and now must face a man that has been fighting to get to the top for a while now in Sterling.
Sterling has been a sort of perennial top fiver in the bantamweight division. He has proven himself capable of hanging with the nest and recently he has put all doubt behind him and finally earned himself a title shot.
Petr Yan vs. Aljamain Sterling finally rebooked for UFC 259
These two men were originally scheduled to meet last year in December but the bout was canceled due to undisclosed reasons on Yan’s end. Many thought travel restrictions could have been in play. The location of this fight is not yet determined. The UFC could very well be planning another stint in Abu Dhabi at Fight Island after the stay in January. The other option would be Las Vegas. Abu Dhabi might be better since they will soon be allowing fans in a limited capacity.
Sterling has momentum coming into this matchup. He trains with killers in Long Island and could be the toughest test for Yan up until now. Yan will have to be ready to go the distance with Sterling and deal with his incredible cardio. This fight will pit the two best at 135 pounds against each other and the best man could be the champion for some time. Yan has the KO power in his hands and Sterling has slick submissions on the ground. It may be a battle to see who can perform better in the other man’s wheelhouse. Either way, this fight is bound to be fireworks.
Prediction: Aljamain Sterling via submission
