The Houston Texans could be going against the grain with their new hire as they prepare to interview Marvin Lewis.
The Houston Texans will have a head start at finding their next head coach for the 2021 season. The name that most recently hit the interview list might surprise many entering the holiday season.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rappoport, the Texans are planning to interview former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis at some point in the coming weeks. Lewis most recently was a member of the Arizona State Sun Devils staff under friend and former NFL head coach Herm Edwards.
Former #Bengals coach Marvin Lewis is expected to interview with the #Texans for their vacant head coaching job, per @MikeGarafolo and me. Lewis is currently on the coaching staff at Arizona State and will draw interest from other NFL teams, as well.

Lewis is best known for his 15-year tenure out with “Who Dey Nation” from 2003-18. During his time, he posted a record of 131-122-3 regular-season record that included seven playoff appearances. The franchise never moved past the Wild Card weekend under his direction.
Most recently, Lewis interviewed last season for the open positions in Washington and Dallas.
Would this be the worst hire for the Texans?
Most recently, Houston interviewed with former Lions head coach Jim Caldwell. Caldwell, 65, helped Detroit finish above .500 in three of his four seasons while also taking the team to the playoffs twice.
He was fired in 2017 following a 9-7 season in favor of Matt Patricia. Patricia recently was fired following an upset loss on Thanksgiving to the Texans.
Despite the comical jokes of Lewis’ career, the team has struggled with his replacement in Zac Taylor. Taylor, who was expected to be the next up-and-coming name on offense, has struggled to generate any success in two seasons.
His record currently sits at 4-24-1, including 0-14-1 when on the road.
Lewis is well-respected around the NFL and should be considered for a second chance with a new franchise. The biggest question is, will Deshaun Watson sign off on him being the leading man?
If Watson likes the pick, fans down at NRG Drive should have little issues with whoever the team brings in.
