Ohio State defensive back Shaun Wade was forced to eat crow for his trash talk of Alabama receiver and Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith.
The Ohio State Buckeyes entered Monday night’s College Football Playoff National Championship Game with a ton of confidence after taking down Clemson. Defensive back Shaun Wade was so confident he decided to say he was ready to cover Heisman winner DeVonta Smith in the title game.
“DeVonta is a great player, quick and shifty and fast,” Wade said via Zoom. “You see it on his highlights. He can do everything in the book as a receiver, and just really looking for that matchup.”
Wade got his wish and Alabama’s star receiver made him eat his words with one of the easiest touchdown receptions you will ever see.

Smith takes in the easy score
The play design was perfect and the entire Ohio State secondary completely lost track of the best receiver in college football. How does that happen?
The catch and score gave Smith an early 83 yards on six receptions. Wade isn’t doing anything to slow him down and his own stock may be falling after he showed so much confidence just a few days ago.
Smith may only be getting started in this one as he looks to continue his dominance during his legendary season. Ohio State’s bold defensive strategy of leaving the Heisman winner wide open is not working.
