Eddie Alvarez back on American prime time: When I go out there and perform, no one can beat me.
Multiple-time former lightweight world champion Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez is brimming with confidence ahead of his next appearance in the ONE Championship circle. Alvarez is set to face No. 2-ranked lightweight contender Iuri Lapicus in the co-main event of ONE on TNT 1 the first of a four-part event series which broadcasts Wed., April 7, live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.
The 37-year-old veteran is excited to be able to perform in front of an American prime time audience once again.
“I’m ecstatic. It has reenergized me. You definitely don’t want to get lost to your hometown fans,” Alvarez told the media. “I love coming to Asia. I love fighting. Asia kind of helped make me who I am. Going back to the Saitama Super Arena, Tokyo Dome, and going back to Asia and fighting for my Asian fans, it was a dream come true to go back to.”
“But at the end of the day, you want to fight for your hometown fans. You want your family and friends to be able to see it. I was blessed enough to be able to get onto TNT, and to go fight live, it’s everything I envisioned when I joined ONE Championship. We spoke about this, we spoke about the possibility of this happening, and now it’s all happening.”
Alvarez is the former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion, and one of the most well-traveled fight veterans in the sport today. Alvarez is looking to add the third and final piece to his mantle, a ONE Championship title, to complete the trifecta of great mixed martial arts world championships.
The Philadelphia native says he is more motivated than ever to put together a spectacular performance and earn himself a title shot.
“When they [ONE Championship] go on American television like that, live, and you get a co-main event slot, it’s your show. I feel like it’s my show again, and I feel like it’s my obligation to put it on for the fans,” said Alvarez. “It has rejuvenated me, reinvigorated me, and definitely pushed me to another level in my training, to be able to go out there and show out.”
ONE on TNT 1 features a main event showdown between ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix, and former 12-time UFC champion Demetrious Johnson and reigning ONE flyweight champion Adriano Moraes.
Also on the card is an appearance from ONE Flyweight Muay Thai champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon.
The pressure is certainly on Alvarez, considered one of the top lightweights in the world currently, to put together a resounding victory. But, he says he feels right in his element, and is comfortable and relaxed heading into the fight with Lapicus.
“I deal with the pressure on a daily basis. I’m my own worst enemy. I’m my biggest critic. When I go into the gym, I’m going to make sure that I can compete at a high level. I’m executing the things I’m working on. I think when I go out there, it’s just a by-product of my training,” said Alvarez. “I don’t think there’s any pressure on my shoulders other than just to go out there and do what I do everyday. I’ll rely on my instincts, I’ll rely on myself. I have a deep trust and belief that I’m the best in the world. When I go out there and perform, no one in the world can beat me.”
The ONE on TNT series will air every Wednesday in the United States from April 7 for four weeks. Each week will include a preliminary card digitally streamed exclusively on the Bleacher Report App and B/R Live from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET, followed by three main card fights televised exclusively on TNT in the U.S. at 10 p.m. ET.
