The New York Mets are off to a slow start but fans can look at one player as a source of joy so far in 2021.
The New York Mets are off to a rough start in 2021. First up was the entire season-opening series against the Washington Nationals being canceled due to COVID-19. Since then the team is 2-3 and just had a game start, only to be suspended almost immediately Sunday. Another postponement arrived Monday.
So far it has been hard for the Mets to find any rhythm. Francisco Lindor only has three hits and the entire offense has a combined three home runs. However, fans can still look toward one player for hope. That is elite ace Jacob deGrom.
Mets fans can still look to Jacob deGrom for positivity
deGrom is no stranger to dominating opposing hitters while getting little to no support from his offense. The ace has made two starts this season and has allowed a total of one earned run in 14 innings of work. The Mets have lost both of those games.
Saturday’s loss was a brutal example of deGrom’s tough tenure in New York. He went eight innings of one-run baseball against the Miami Marlins and had 14 strikeouts. The final score was a 3-0 loss. That gives him three runs of support in his 14 innings this season.
The Mets had hype swirling around the franchise all offseason after the blockbuster trade to acquire Lindor. But it is still incredibly early and that hype should not fade at all after one week of play. However, this is still New York City and fans want instant success. Seeing deGrom play at his usual level is a great sign and means the sky is not yet falling.
Now comes the actual task of winning games when deGrom is on the mound. For some reason, that has not been easy for the Mets to do.
