Although Tony Ferguson didn’t receive a UFC title this year, he proved that he is worthy of being called our People’s Champion for 2020.
It has been three years since Tony Ferguson won a UFC title, and it was a fleeting interim title. Since then he has been trying to work himself back up to the top of the UFC lightweight division and once again feels that UFC gold around his waist. Although 2020 didn’t go as planned for Ferguson, he is a tough fighter who doesn’t back down from a fight. For that, we named him as the 2020 FanSided People’s Champion.
The People’s Champion is an award given to a fighter who is not a champion but we wish they were. A fighter who shows heart and deserves an honorary title just for who they are. Ferguson is that guy. He has had some bad times but doesn’t give up. Even now with two losses in a row, he wants that belt and will make sure he fights his way back to it.
Back in May, Ferguson had his shot at another interim title when he took on Justin Gaethje at UFC 249. He was originally scheduled to face Khabib Nurmagomedov at that event finally for the fifth time and for the real title, but with the pandemic things went south. Nurmagomedov was removed from the card, and the title was downgraded to an interim bout, however, that didn’t deter Ferguson. Nobody would have blamed him for waiting for Nurmagomedov and the title especially considering the circumstances, but that is not the way Ferguson rolls.
He lost that bout to Gaethje and went on his path to the top. Next was the ever-dangerous Charles Oliveira. That fight didn’t go Fergsuon’s way. He lost via unanimous decision and the second in a row. Although the end of 2020 might be bleak for Ferguson, he will be back and ready to pursue his quest to the top in 2021.
