This isn’t the first time Ohio State has faced a contest as a seven-point dog. Clemson was favored by the same amount in the Sugar Bowl.
The CFP Championship Game will feature Alabama and Ohio State
Alabama has earned their status as a big favorite. They rolled through the 2020 regular season without much drama, winning the SEC with dominant performance after dominant performance. The closest margin of victory all season was 15 points in a shootout with Ole Miss.
Nick Saban’s squad went into Friday’s Rose Bowl Game against Notre Dame with a similar mindset. The Tide overwhelmed the Irish in a routine 31-14 victory that was never really close.
With Heisman contenders like Mac Jones and DeVonta Smith, not to mention ace running back Najee Harris, leading the way, it’ll be a tough ask for anyone to get the better of Alabama.
Ohio State’s road to the playoff was shorter with just six games handing them the Big Ten title. Their lack of games created skepticism around their inclusion in the Top 4, but they silenced doubters on Saturday. Justin Fields was immense with six touchdowns as the Buckeyes trounced Trevor Lawrence and Clemson.
Alabama and Ohio State have played each other four times in history with the Tide holding a 3-1 advantage. Their most recent meeting, however, was a victory for the Buckeyes, who bested their opponent in the 2015 CFP semifinal, 42-35.
