Some big offseason news has arrived for the Houston Astros leading up to spring training, as the team will reportedly sign Cuban star Pedro Leon.
With spring training right around the corner, Houston Astros fans can already start to get fired up, as the team is set to welcome a major addition. On Thursday, reports have surfaced that Houston is getting ready to sign prized Cuban prospect Pedro Leon to a new deal.
Leon, 21, is No. 3 on MLB.com’s Top 30 international prospects list. Indeed a Cuban native, Leon is a stud outfielder, known for his rocket for an arm and outstanding strength at the dish. While he may not be expected to be a superstar right away, he’s got plenty of potential.
Top Cuban OF Pedro Leon is expected to sign soon with the Astros for $4M. Tomorrow is the first day for international signings. Leon is repped by Wasserman.

With the Astros in line to lose perhaps both George Springer and Michael Brantley, adding to the outfield depth within the organization is key. While Leon is unlikely to start right away in the majors given his raw ability and age, he clearly has a ton of potential.
Houston signing Cuban outfielder Pedro Leon is huge news for the organization
If you take a look at Leon’s swing, it surely is a thing of beauty. As soon as he makes contact with the ball, there’s a sweet sound of impact that follows.
Houston had reportedly been favored for months to land him, but things weren’t finalized until this week. Again, it’s surely exciting news for Dusty Baker and the rest of the Astros. The team enters the new season with high expectations, despite likely losing the likes of Springer and Brantley. Justin Verlander’s injury status doesn’t help matters.
Houston will be motivated after they lost to the Rays in the ALCS and watched the Dodgers go on to win the World Series. In the past few days, Houston has finally opened their wallets to add talent to the roster in Leon and former Dodgers reliever Pedro Baez.
For the Astros’ sake, we hope there’s more to come.
