Jared Goff showed in Week 16 that he’s not the answer for the Los Angeles Rams. Here are three options to replace him in 2021.
The Los Angeles Rams traded a gargantuan amount of draft capital to the Tennessee Titans in 2016 to select Cal-Berkley’s Jared Goff. The decision was derided, but Goff proved to be a quality option under center for Sean McVay’s offense. But then, the Rams decided to give him a four-year, $134 million contract following the team’s Super Bowl 53 loss to the New England Patriots. Things haven’t been the same since.
After a brutal performance against the previously winless New York Jets, Goff followed it up with yet another stinker in Week 16 against the Seattle Seahawks. Goff’s play has been so inconsistent, that it could very well cost the Rams any chance of making a return trip to the Super Bowl. But, they can alleviate that by bringing in his replacement.
Here are three options to replace Goff as Los Angeles’ starting quarterback.
The New Orleans Saints signed Jameis Winston this past offseason to serve in the Teddy Bridgewater role just in case veteran Drew Brees were to go down with injury. Additionally, Winston underwent LASIK surgery to improve his vision. This was bound to be the year where we could see the new and improved Jamies. But we were robbed of that.
Once Brees suffered rib fractures and a punctured lung during their game against the San Francisco 49ers, Winston entered in relief. Many expected Winston would serve as the starter with Brees set to miss multiple weeks. Instead, head coach Sean Payton opted to start gadget player Taysom Hill as their starter, with Winston standing on the sidelines as the backup.
With Winston set to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end, there could be no other place for him to succeed than in Los Angeles. Winston has shown potential of being a good quarterback, but he needs to cut down on his mistakes. We had no better proof of that than his “30-for-30” campaign in 2019. If there’s anyone who can help Winston develop into a consistently good quarterback, it’s McVay.
